As part of an ongoing effort by the Georgia Department of Transportation to replace functionally obsolete bridges which can no longer meet the demands of modern transportation and trucking, the Department contracted with Scott Bridge Company to replace the steel truss bridge spanning Lake Lanier at the Chestatee River with a concrete structure offering wider travel lanes, shoulders, and improved bridge barrier railings.
The new bridge is founded on concrete shafts drilled deep into the riverbed. All river work was performed from barges reducing impacts to the lake and ecosystems. This $20 Million project was begun in May of 2016 and opened to traffic in early 2019.
